Questions & Answers

What is comprehensive, medically-sound family planning?
Comprehensive, medically-sound family planning policy includes:
  • Suporting medically accurate, age-appropriate reproductive health education in communities and schools that is more comprehensive than abstinence-only instruction.
  • Increasing access to affordable family planning and to reproductive health counseling and services for all South Carolinians, including those in underserved and rural areas.
  • Safeguarding existing access and removing barriers to reproductive healthcare: that includes preventing future obstructions to reproductive health services, including contraception.

Why is this issue so important now?
Extreme groups are attacking rights we take for granted and making inroads to block access to basic birth control and comprehensive teen pregnancy prevention programs.  Despite evidence that these programs and services reduce rates of teen and unwanted pregnancies, our elected officials too often support an agenda adverse to sound family planning policy.  In 2008, it is vital that reasonable people speak up and support candidates who share our objectives.  We must elect officials who will stand up to extreme groups and protect these basic rights.

What is SCRHPAC's stance on abortion?
In an ideal world - one with appropriate comprehensive reproductive health education and emphasis on family planning - girls and women would rarely find themselves in situations where they feel the need to consider abortion. With thorough reproductive health education and easier access to birth control, we feel that the abortion rate can dramatically decrease. Recent research has shown that teens are much less likely to engage in sex if they have had sex education at school.

In the real world in South Carolina, however, good education and family planning are often inadequate. We feel that each situation is unique and that private family-planning and other health decisions are best made between the woman, her family, her doctor and within her personal faith and values.

What are some of the societal and economic costs we pay because we lack a comprehensive family planning policy?
The costs are far-reaching and affect every one of us.  Consider:
  • The children of teen mothers are at increased risk for both prematurity and low birthweight, conditions that contribute to a host of later medical problems.
  • These children also score lower on standard tests and are much more likely to require special education classes.
  • 8 out of 10 teen mothers receive some form of public assistance; half of all teen mothers and 75% of unwed teen mothers are on welfare within 5 years of giving birth.
  • The sons of young teen mothers are 3 times more likely to be incarcerated than those born to adult mothers.
